Among the Sierra Nevada, California by Albert Bierstadt. We saw this painting (or, what may be a reproduction of the painting) at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas this weekend. The painting is 72 inches tall x 120 inches wide. The scale makes for an impressive effect.

  1. The Pattern Language (the book and the patterns, themselves) does address a framework, architecturally-speaking, for some of what Mr. Vonnegut is suggesting. Creating same, with a group of similarly like-minded/focused individuals is more challenging. Of course, a community doesn’t have to fit on one site/footprint. In the olden days – and sometimes today – a stable community could/can be found in … a church!

    1. I would love a copy of The Pattern Language… Maybe Santa will read this and bring me one this year. I agree that “church” is a great community building tool, for many people. Religious church is not for everyone, though – me included.
